Observation Narrative
This plot is located in an extensive network of linear depressions that lace a low, undulating part of the inner Coastal Plain south of Fredericksburg. The depressions are variably dominated by hydric oaks (Quercus phellos, Q. palustris), sweetgum, and red maple. Hydrologic regime and flooding depth appears to vary considerably within the depressions; the plot is representative of the shallower and and more intermittently flooded end of the gradient and has higher herb cover than more deeply flooded sites. The forest cover is medium-aged and probably regenerated following logging and other disturbances. A long ditch located some distance from the plot indicates past attempts to drain this area, probably for agricultural use.
